Should you ask older employees not to like your posts on Instagram if you want to target a younger audience?
I'm working for a university in Europe. Our school marketing has asked us not to like posts anymore because when we like the content, younger people will be less likely to see our content. I've asked for more info and this is the explanation:
The algorithm works in exponential waves. Instagram shows posts first to the 10-20% most engaged followers. In our case teachers are our most engaged followers. If teachers don't like the posts in time, the post won't go to our real target audience: the students. The algorithm knows that if the 10-20% most engaged followers don't like the content, that others won't like it and it won't push the content towards the other 80-90%.
As we want to reach young people as quickly as possible, we can't take the risk that our teachers determine what potential students can or won't see. Potential students should be the first to see it. As Teachers like our Instagram content, the algorithm is learning that they are the main target audience and we have to learn Instagram that students are our main target audience.
That's why Teachers better not like the content.
I have never heard of this strategy before and can't find any resources online that this is a good strategy.
Any thoughts of proof that this is the way to go? Arguments pro or con?
